Patti McCracken

McCracken spent 15 years in the newsrooms of the St. Petersburg Times, U.S. News & World Report, and the Chicago Tribune before moving to Europe. She seeks out the story behind the fray of the headlines, and has written eloquently and expertly on everything from the pain of post-war Bosnia, to the struggling Republic of Georgia, the club of female serial killers in Hungary, the last remaining leper colony in Europe, and the marvelous madness of the streets of Saigon. McCracken was twice a Knight International Press Fellow. She was a foreign correspondent and international journalism trainer based in Austria for 17 years. Her articles appear in various USA and UK publications, including Smithsonian, Wall Street Journal, Guardian, San Francisco Chronicle, Chicago Tribune, Christian Science Monitor, Afar, and more. Her new book, The Angel Makers: Arsenic, a Midwife, and History’s Most Astonishing Murder Ring, is forthcoming in March 2023 by HarperCollins. She is represented by The Gersh Agency. She moved back to the U.S. in 2016 and currently resides on Martha’s Vineyard. She is spending the summer in Ghent.
