Teen Library Assistant [FILLED for summer 2023]
The Muse Writers Center is looking for a teen, 16-18, who wants to work as our assistant librarian.
We’re looking for a teen who is a total bookworm and who might harbor hopes of a future career as a librarian. We are looking for a responsible, hard-working high schooler who is excited to learn a new skill set and is comfortable working independently. We’re looking for a passionate, organized individual who wants to give back to the Hampton Roads community through the literary arts.
This is an unpaid position; however, this position can count towards volunteer hours. Our teen assistant librarian will also have the opportunity to register for a free creative writing class and will be provided with a Muse Writers Center membership.

Youth Teaching Internship [applications open April 2023]
The Muse Writers Center is looking for someone with some teaching experience to join our team as a Youth Teaching Intern.
Responsibilities include creating teaching schedules, developing curriculum with other youth teachers, and working with the Youth Writing Director. The Youth Teaching Intern will also be expected to teach some sessions. Sessions taught are paid teaching hours.
This is an unpaid position, however, we can offer students credit with their university, and all interns will receive a Muse membership card and the ability to take up to two free creative writing classes at The Muse per term.
Hours per week: 5

Media Creation and Development Internship [applications open April 2023]
The Muse is looking for a creative and savvy intern to help us up our game in the ways we promote, produce, and deliver the literary arts to the world. We need someone who is tech knowledgeable, knows how to edit and stream video content and also knows how this content works in the current social media world. This position has room for creative experimentation and incredible room to grow in the organization. Potential to turn into a paid position for the right candidate.
Intern responsibilities will include:
- Editing video and audio content, such as recordings of readings and panels
- Assisting with content creation and development, including helping brainstorm and produce a new Muse podcast
- Occasional social media content creation, including videos for the Muse TikTok
- Occasionally assisting Muse staff in live streaming hybrid events such as book launches
- If there is another aspect of media creation/development that you would like to explore that is not mentioned here, let us know in your application! We are open to any and all ideas and want to allow our interns the freedom to spend the majority of their time focusing on what matters most to them.
This is an unpaid position, however, we can offer students credit with their university and will work with you and your advisor/department chair/team to fulfill the requirements of a for-credit internship. All interns will receive a Muse membership and up to two free creative writing classes at The Muse per term.

Editorial Internship [applications open April 2023]
The Muse Writers Center is looking for a part-time editorial intern who is creative, driven, and interested in learning about the behind-the-scenes work it takes to run a literary nonprofit. This is perfect for you if you:
- Are looking for an opportunity to gain real-life experience in the literary AND nonprofit worlds;
- Want to not only hone your copywriting skills but have a real say in the narratives we put out into the world and how we celebrate our writing community;
- Want to help with and/or learn about grant writing
Intern responsibilities will include:
- Writing blog posts for the Muse website
- Helping curate The Muse Bolt, our monthly email with the highlights of what's going on in the Muse community
- Finding and sharing writer's resources and the occasional writing prompt for the Muse community via our website, social media and/or the Muse Discord server
- If you are interested in grant writing, you will also work with our Executive Director and staff to learn about the process
This is an unpaid position, however, we can offer students credit with their university and will work with you and your advisor/department chair/team to fulfill the requirements of a for-credit internship.
