Write Strong Characters

This seminar is designed for writers who want to sharpen their ability writing fully fleshed out characters. We will examine how writers can create main and supporting characters who mirror each other in order to clarify conflict, plot, and themes. The class begins with examples of such pairings of characters from various writers such as Edward P. Jones, Kiese Laymon, Alice Munro, Margaret Atwood, and Lorrie Moore. After some examination and discussion, students will work on prompts that will help them develop relationships between mirror characters. Students will have a chance to share and provide feedback for each other’s work.
