Trauma Writing Seminar at Langley Air Force Base
Words Bear Witness: A Trauma Writing Seminar
As human beings, we’ve all experienced trauma, no matter how big or small. During this three-hour seminar, we will define trauma and explore its relationship to language and healing. We will examine how trauma disrupts the language centers of the brain and how poetic devices grant us access to the images, metaphors, and patterns that stitch our memory fragments into a more complete narrative. This class will include a close reading of various poetry and memoir excerpts with a special focus on veteran writers. A series of generative, guided, writing prompts will provide students with creative ways to bring their own stories to the page. If you have an important personal story you want to tell but don’t know where to begin, then this class is for you.
The Class is free for all active duty, veterans, family, and caregivers of Langley Airforce Base. This workshop and others made possible in part through the National Endowment for the Arts.
