Creating a Magic System

More and more, fantasy readers are becoming invested not only in the compelling characters and fantastical locations of their favorite stories but the physical rules of the worlds those stories take place in. And with the popularity of authors like Brandon Sanderson and genres like LitRPG, more and more readers are clamoring for interesting, complex magic systems.

This workshop will take you through the process of creating a magic system for your fantasy novel. We’ll discuss the “hard” vs “soft” approaches to magic, examine the interplay between magic systems, characters, and plot, and even look at real-life magical inspirations. No matter the type of fantasy story you’re telling, this workshop will help you capture its magic!

Please note: This class or event is hybrid. Some attendees will be in-person and some will attend online. There may be a limited number of in-person seats available. If you are participating online (using Zoom or a similar live platform), students or attendees should have a stable internet connection. Class participants: you should have a computer or device with a webcam and microphone; and your Zoom link will be automatically sent to you after you register.
