Learn everything you need to know to start sharing stories. As a member of the United States military, you are bound to have many unique experiences. Rather than trying to explain to someone that “they had to have been there,” learn the skill of creative writing and put your stories on the page so they can come alive and be experienced by every reader. Learn the practical basics or sharpen your skills with the help of two veterans who are seasoned writers. If there is a book in ya, they’ll help you find it and get it out.

The class is free for all active duty, veterans, family, and caregivers of the U.S. Armed Forces. This workshop and others made possible in part through the National Endowment for the Arts.

David Cascio

David discovered the Muse in the Spring of 2014. He had a story he wanted to tell and needed help to round out his knowledge of writing. Thanks to a flyer placed in just the right place, he has taken over fifty classes at the Muse and has completed a draft of a novel centered around what he knows best, his military experience. Dave is a retired SEAL and pilot with 20 years of honorable service. He was stationed at SEAL Team Four and Naval Special Warfare Development Group during his tenure in the Navy. Upon retiring, David used his GI Bill to complete Aviation Maintenance School in Chesapeake. David continues to be a regular student, volunteer, host, and co-teacher of INDOC while supporting the growth of the Muse in the community.

Karrie McDaniels

Karrie writes under the name Karrie Loomis and is the author of The Rocking Horse a stranger-danger middle grade fiction and is currently writing a book club fiction novel and non fiction essays. She is a U.S. Navy Veteran and enjoys writing about her military experience. Karrie holds a B.S. in psychology with a minor in world religions from Old Dominion University. Karrie serves on the Board of Directors for the Hampton Roads Writers Organization, is an assistant organizer of the Tidewater Writers critique group, and is on the admin team of an online group of over 3000 authors worldwide. She discovered The Muse in 2015 and continues to be a regular student, volunteer, host, and outreach teaching artist. Karrie is active with The Muse because she is grateful for the information, motivation, and fellowship provided to her and numerous other writers, and she wants to support The Muse’s growth so our literary center can continue to inspire and benefit writers for many more years to come.
