Now, let's finish National Poetry Month off with a bang:

The Muse is ready for Give Local 757! Are you?

The Challenge:

If we receive donations from more than 700 individuals in one day during Give Local 757, a generous donor will donate an additional $15,000 to our organization!

This extra $15,000 will help fund our extensive, free outreach program that transforms lives by integrating the innate benefits of creative writing with wellness practices for self-discovery, connection, and empowerment.

Pinky Promise to donate on April 23rd by signing up for Operation: Pinky Promise!

Congratulations, Teen Fellows!

For the past couple months, our Teen Fellows have been getting settled into our 2024 Teen Writers Fellowship Program. Classes have begun and words have been written!

We are honored to introduce our eight talented youth writers:

🎉 Piper, Finley, Lincoln, Maggie, Phoenix, Genevieve, Cass, and Stella 🎉

  • Hi! My name is Stella. I'm a young author, born and raised in Norfolk, VA. I like to write poetry and short fiction. I'm inspired by my early childhood, my dreams, whatever book I'm reading, and the Lafayette River, which I'm on almost every day, rowing for Granby Crew. I applied to the fellowship to improve my writing and meet other young authors!
  • My name is Cass and I partake in a large amount of extracurriculars that eat up most of my time. I tend to write fantasy and I applied to the Muse Writer's Fellowship in order to learn more about writing and be able to better express ideas in my head.
  • My name is Genevieve, and I am studying abroad in Italy for my junior year. I spend my time writing about normal people who just happened to become main characters, backpacking, and playing piano. I have been reading and writing my whole life, and I am so grateful to have been given the opportunity to work with other young writers!
  • Hi! My name is Phoenix and I am a junior in high school. I love movies (a few of my favorites are The Fantastic Mr. Fox and Dead Poets Society) and I also love music (especially Snoh Aalegra and Cleo Sol)! I love to write poetry and I am currently the 2023-2024 Hampton Roads Youth Poet Laureate Ambassador. I applied for the fellowship because I wanted to master my craft and meet new writing friends!
  • Hi! My name is Maggie and I’m a fellow at the muse! I love everything fantasy and Taylor Swift, (#1 folklore stan) and I write fantasy romance! I applied to be a fellow in order to help me on my writing journey and learn the skills to help me finish my book!
  • My name is Lincoln and I am a part of the Fellowship because writing is the only thing I’m good at. My only joys in life are listening to Phil Ochs songs and drinking ginger ale. I write comedy, but if no one laughs then they spontaneously become poems.
  • Hello! My name is Finley and I write fantasy and realistic mystery fiction mainly, but I’m looking to learn how to write dystopian too. I spend most of my time reading and hanging out with my friends. I applied for the fellowship so I could learn more about different types of writing styles and about the publishing world.
  • My name is Piper Smith, and I’m learning at the Muse Writers Center. I like to create in general, like draw, write, and sometimes make small games, and take care of my three annoying cats. I spend most of my time writing short stories or short excerpts from the stories I have yet to write in full. I applied for the fellowship so I could hone my writing skills and hopefully perfect them so I can finally finish one of the many stories in my head. Mucho gusto.

Celebrating "Poem in Your Pocket Day"🌸

"Poem in Your Pocket Day takes place every year on a day in National Poetry Month. Poem in Your Pocket Day 2024 will take place on April 18."

Each year on national Poem in Your Pocket Day, the town of Charlottesville, Virginia, unites in a day-long celebration of poetry. The project is spearheaded by Jefferson-Madison Regional Library, whose staff recruit members of the community—

students, senior citizens, local business owners, neighbors, and friends—to distribute poem scrolls throughout Charlottesville. Over 7,000 scrolls are distributed to a local hospital, a children's museum, libraries, senior centers, nursing homes, and numerous small businesses in the downtown area.

The Muse Writers Center encourages all of our writers to participate on April 18th, 2024 by writing, sharing, and promoting your poetry!
