Creative Writing INDOC: Putting Military Stories on the Page (Now Online)

Saturday, May 23, 1-4 p.m., Online, More information
Brought to you by The Muse Writers Center & The Slover Library. Learn everything you need to know to start sharing stories. As a member of the United States military, you are bound to have many unique experiences. Rather than trying to explain to someone that “they had to have been there,” learn the skill of creative writing and put your stories on the page so they can come alive and be experienced by every reader. Learn the practical basics or sharpen your skills with the help of two veterans who are seasoned writers. The class is free for all active duty, veterans, family, and caregivers of the U.S. Armed Forces. This workshop and others made possible in part through the National Endowment for the Arts.

Instructor: Elizabeth Heaney. Registration required. The class is free for all active duty, veterans, family, and caregivers of the U.S. Armed Forces. This workshop and others made possible in part through the National Endowment for the Arts.

The Honor Was Mine: Reading and Discussion (Live Online)

Saturday, May 30, 4-5:30 p.m., Online, More information
Reading from her award-winning book, The Honor Was Mine: A Look Inside the Struggles of Military Veterans, Elizabeth Heaney shares the stories she encountered while counseling combat veterans and their loved ones. From a young combat veteran hiding in his closet on bad days to a commander’s spouse who speaks of attending ninety-three memorial services, the stories bring us face-to-face with unheard-of struggles and fears. As a counselor on numerous military bases, Heaney discovers that the warriors’ reticence and pride make vulnerable conversations tenuous and difficult; she finds herself in the roles of observer and helper, outsider and intimate. After a brief reading, we’ll have ample time for questions and discussion. All welcome. The event made possible in part through the National Endowment for the Arts.
