The Muse Writers Center

Press Release

Calling all Playwrights, Directors, and Actors!

Norfolk, March 21st, 2022: Little Theatre of Norfolk, the Norfolk Playwrights Collective, and The Muse Writers Center team up to present a weekend of creativity: the 48 Hour Play Festival, where YOU write, rehearse, and star in a short play of your own making, all in 48 hours.

This is a challenge in which teams of playwrights, directors, and actors are assigned a genre, a character, a prop, and a line of dialogue, and have 48 hours to create a short play/one act containing those elements.

The theme of the inaugural 48 Hour Play Festival is MYTHS & LEGENDS.
Myths and Legends include various mythological stories and characters from Aboriginal, African, Aztec, Basque, Celtic, Chinese, Egyptian, Etruscan, Greek, Haitian, Hindu, Inca, Islamic, Japanese, Judaic, Korean, Latvian, Mayan, Mesopotamian, Native American, Norse, Persian, Polynesian, and Roman mythologies—just to name a few. These stories were originally told to explain the mysteries of the world: creation, grief, divine will, fertility, death, love. Myths are a major part of many cultures throughout the world and shape how we perceive, make sense of, and tell stories about the world around us.

Some of you creators out there may be familiar with the 48-Hour Film Project, a yearly competition established in Washington DC in 2001 where a few filmmakers had 48 hours to write, produce, and edit a short film to be premiered at the 49th hour. Since then, tens of thousands of filmmakers across the world have produced short films created in two days under the moniker of the 48 Hour Film Project.

The concept of pulling this feat off as a play may not have the rich and storied history of its film forerunner, but since 2010, a few 48 Hour Play Projects have popped up around the country at local theatres and universities. We are excited to bring this fun and creative challenge to the artists of Hampton Roads.

The final performances are open to the public and will be held at the Little Theatre of Norfolk at 7pm on Sunday April 10th and tickets are available for a suggested donation of $5-$20.
