Call for applications to the ODU MFA program

The ODU MFA Creative Writing program is now accepting applications for incoming students in Fall 2021. They offer a three-year course of study in fiction, nonfiction, and poetry, with the option to study part-time and earn the degree in four to six years. Fellowships and teaching assistantships are available. Application deadline: March 1, 2021.;

The MFA core faculty consists of Virginia Poet Laureate Luisa Igloria, 2020 Library of Virginia Literary Prize-winning poet Benjamin Naka-Hasebe Kingsley, New York Times Best-Selling Writer Sheri Reynolds, Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary Festival Prize-winning novelist Kent Wascom, Whiting Award-winning fiction writer John McManus, and our newest faculty member, the poet and nonfiction writer Molly McCully Brown, winner of the Lexi Rudnitsky First Book Prize and recipient of a United States Artists Fellowship and the Amy Lowell Poetry Traveling Scholarship. Our 2022 Mina Hohenberg Darden Chair in Creative Writing is Jaquira Diaz, Whiting Award-winning author of Ordinary Girls: A Memoir.

In addition to in-person seminars, we've begun offering some online synchronous and asynchronous courses. All students can participate in editing our student-run literary journal, Barely South Review. Students can find volunteer teaching opportunities throughout the year with ODU Writers in Community, a student-run non-profit program dedicated to helping the diverse communities of Hampton Roads by cultivating literacy and creativity.

Fellowship support for incoming students includes our College of Arts and Letters Teaching Assistantships, the Perry Morgan Fellowship, the Friends of the ODU MFA Program Scholarship (offered to the otherwise-unfunded incoming student with the highest undergraduate GPA), and the Sutelan Scholarship.

The application consists of a sample of creative work, a personal statement, previous transcripts, and recommendation letters. There's no longer any GRE requirement. Deadline: March 1. Apply here.

Please write to John McManus at jmcmanus@odu.edu with any questions.
