Our Teachers

The Muse's instructors are all working writers and published authors who have taught courses at colleges, universities, and other community organizations. Read our teachers’ biographies and see what classes they are currently teaching.

Bill Candler

Bill Candler, now retired, was the co-founder of the area’s former lifestyle and arts publication Port Folio Magazine. He was its editor for 10 years. Prior to that, he variously served as the editor of the former Metro, The Magazine of Hampton Roads; as a partner in the Donning Company, then a local book publishing company; and as admin assistant to the president of ODU. He also was the first college-wide Director of Communications for the four-campus Tidewater Community College. At the time of his retirement, he was Senior Editor for the editorial division of Landmark Media’s subsidiary, Dominion Enterprises. Originally from northern Virginia, he has been in the area since 1970, and now lives in Downtown Norfolk with his spousal equivalent, Jean Trask. He has two children and three grandchildren. His interests include domestic and foreign travel, reading, hiking and biking, hanging out in area coffee shops, and, in the past, whitewater canoeing.
