Teacher Feature: Jen Malia
Jen Malia is an autistic author and advocate. Her debut children’s picture book, Too Sticky!: Sensory Issues with Autism (Albert Whitman, April 2020), is about a girl who has to overcome her fear of sticky hands to participate in a slime experiment. The main character is based on her own and her daughter’s experiences living with autism and sensory issues (jenmalia.com).
This summer, Jen Malia is teaching Writing Children’s Books on Wednesdays beginning Jun 9 – Aug 18 7:00 pm – 9:30 pm.
Writing Children’s Books will empower you to explore the unique voice, character development, plot, and world building needed to write in different age categories. In this course, you will actively write and revise original picture books or chapters for book-length projects and submit them for review!
Jen Malia earned her PhD in English and MS in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from the University of Southern California. She’s Associate Professor of English at Norfolk State University.
