The Muse Welcomes Michael Harvey to the Board of Directors

Michael Harvey, along with his wife and two daughters, moved to Norfolk in 2005 after landing at Norfolk’s Waterside Marina during a sailing adventure that began in Seattle. Having come from the tech world, Michael was quickly employed as an Executive Vice President at a local software company, the first of many such positions.

His youngest daughter, Rhiannon, discovered The Muse in 2006. Even at a young age, “Rhiannon was a serious writer,” says Michael. “It was a wonderful that The Muse existed, and she just thrived there. I think that’s why she is still a serious writer today.”

Fast forward to 2024, and Michael was set to retire from his latest position at Corra Technology where he served as Chief Operations Officer. When considering what to do next, he found he had a desire to give back to the Hampton Roads community, focusing on social justice, the environment, and the arts.

“I had a fairly intense career in business, even though I never saw myself as a business. person. I became good at it,” says Michael. “But that didn’t leave time for creative pursuits. When I was in a position to retire, I was grateful, and wanted to pay it forward.”

Getting more deeply involved at The Muse, where his daughter had thrived, seemed a natural fit. “Our whole family are readers and writers. I have always been very attuned to the power of language. I’m in love with words and books,” says Michael. “We realized The Muse is touching so many lives and communities, parlaying the power of language as something good for all these people. It was something I wanted to get behind.”

Michael Harvey joins the 2025-2027 board class at The Muse Writers Center and has already been a key voice in creating The Muse’s next strategic plan as a member, and then chair, of the Strategic Planning Committee.
