Happy Volunteer Appreciation Month

“Service to others is the rent I pay for my room here on Earth.” –Muhammad Ali (1942-2016)

From the first time I heard this quote over 20 years ago it really spoke to me. I was actually speaking with a group of young adults who were telling me that they didn’t quite see themselves in that role at this point in their lives. We continued the dialogue by talking about how much your actions matter.

So, I’m wishing each of you a very Happy Volunteer Appreciation Month! No, you won’t find a Hallmark card with those sentiments but let me be the first to send my appreciation to all volunteers everywhere!

By helping others, you build empathy, confidence, and valuable life skills, while forming relationships with people who share your desire to give back. Many volunteers find that the experience changes their perspective and brings a deeper sense of fulfillment.

Volunteering for nonprofit organizations such as The Muse Writers Center is one of the most powerful ways to make a real difference right here in Hampton Roads. Behind every outreach program, fundraising event, youth program, and journaling class for those facing health issues or other concerns are everyday people who choose to show up and help. In fact, most days a volunteer will answer our phone or greet you with a smile when you stop by our office. Some volunteers serve on our Board of Directors, and some even end up coming to work for us!

Our Muse community has been built by individuals who are willing to get involved. You don’t need special skills or a large amount of free time—just the willingness to help. Take the first step today by reaching out to me to see how your time and efforts can create lasting change, starting right where you live.

If you’d like more information about how you can be a part of this valuable group, please visit our volunteer page.
