Writing Womanhood: Complex Female Characters Beyond Archetype
Compelling female characters are not symbols, tropes, or archetypes, they are complex human beings shaped by desire, contradiction, vulnerability, and power.
In this intermediate/advanced course, writers will explore how to craft multidimensional female protagonists who move beyond cliché. Through craft discussion, character exploration, and writing exercises, participants will examine the emotional, psychological, and social dimensions that shape women’s lives and identities in fiction.
Topics include:
• Feminine archetypes vs authentic psychology
• Power, vulnerability, ambition, and identity
• Desire, sexuality, and agency in narrative
• Writing women across genres and story worlds
• Emotional contradiction and complexity
By the end of the course, writers will leave with fully developed female protagonists and a deeper understanding of how to portray womanhood with nuance and authenticity.
