Writing the Wild Woman
The Wild Woman archetype represents a fierce, untamed feminine energy that rejects societal constraints to embrace intuition, independence, and a more natural, authentic life. In this class, we will look at examples of the Wild Woman in story and discuss not only the creative decisions behind each character, but also the importance, and social relevance of giving this character archetype a voice.
We will also explore how to write this kind of character with depth, nuance, and emotional truth. Each writer will develop their own Wild Woman character within their own story – they are welcome to bring a character-in-progress. Through writing prompts, exercises, sharing, and discussion, we will support the strength of these Wild Women characters as they come to life on the page.
Topics include:
- Feminine archetypes vs. authentic psychology
- Power, vulnerability, ambition, and identity
- Desire, sexuality, and agency
- Independence vs. collective
- Motherhood, daughterhood and their nuances
- Emotional contradiction and complexity
Some character examples we may discuss include Emma from The Drama, June from The Handmaid’s Tale, Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games, Daenerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones, Rue Bennett from Euphoria, and Furiosa from Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.
