Writing The Thing
Do you feel like you need, or want, to write “the thing” but don’t know where to start? In this mid-level to high-level poetry class/workshop, we will grapple with and learn from texts surrounding the idea of “the thing.” “The thing” could be a large idea, set of ideas, or a seemingly smaller idea that you have been grappling with but can’t find the words to say. “The thing” may be something you’re not sure how to say yet or how to interpret– but will learn to do so poetically with weekly activities. Activities include: crafts, reading and discussing essays, interactive activities with classmates, and one-on-one time with the instructor for personal feedback and guidance. By completing these activities and having an open, welcoming environment, what is currently tucked away will be fleshed out to create space for this “thing” or group of “things.” Ideally, this class is for students who have ideas for individual poems, or a set of poems, who want to understand what they are writing and why they are writing it. Does it have a deeper meaning? If so, how do you say, or show that, in poetry? The goal by the end of this few-week class/workshop is to have a collection of revised poems and the confidence to trust yourself and your instincts as a poet.
Please note: This class or event is in-person and will be held at our center.
