Writing the Lyric Essay: How to Braid Poetry with Prose.
Lyric essays stand at the confluence of musical, image-driven language from poetry and the expansive truth-telling of the essay. Beginning with a study of craft, we will examine the variations on the form, as well as analyzing works by lyric essayists such as Claudia Rankine, Maggie Nelson, Sherman Alexie, and Heidi Czerwiec. Students will also draft and workshop their own lyric essays, fine-tuning the balance of techniques, ultimately finishing the four weeks with at least one strong work in progress.
