Writing Elegy: But O heart! heart! heart!
In this seminar, we’ll let Walt Whitman’s cry from “O Captain! My Captain!” snap us into this revered and melancholy world of the elegy. An elegy is typically a lament for the dead in the form of a poem or a song, and along with Whitman’s classic poem, we’ll discuss Edna St. Vincent Millay’s, “Elegy Before Death.” Contemporaries like Traci Brimhall, Matt Rasmussen, and Diane Seuss will inspire us to grieve and love our own poems into existence.
