Writing a Sense of Place & Setting

This seminar is designed for writers who wish to develop the sense of place in their fiction. Through an engaging process of providing examples, sharing ideas, and writing prompts, writers will further develop the sense of place in their stories by exploring their characters and their view of the world. We will study such writers as Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Louise Erdrich, Larry McMurtry, and James Baldwin. Students will write or revise a scene, discovering how to build worlds through imagery, characters’ thoughts and perceptions, and dialogue. Students will have a chance to share and provide feedback for each other’s work.

Please note: This class or event will be held online (using Zoom or a similar live platform). To participate, students or attendees should have a stable internet connection. Class participants: you should have a computer or device with a webcam and microphone; and your Zoom link will be automatically sent to you after you register. Check your spam box if you don't see it.

Prerequisite: Open to writers of all levels of experience
