Worldbuilding for Songwriters

Song lyrics often have the magical ability to pull us out of the physical and emotional spaces we’re in as we’re listening. Dream pop songs can paint lush watercolor scenes with pastel skies while sea shanty ballads frame the harsh weather, rough tides, and biting words of life on the water. In this one-meeting workshop, we’ll refine our skills at worldbuilding within the landscape of a song. Developing an original song from the outside in, we’ll begin with painting a world (lyrically) and then peer deeper into that world to discover the center or the song. We’ll listen to several examples of songs with thorough world building and come away with a stronger sense of imagery driven, emotionally imbued lyrics.
