Words We Can Hear: Sound in Writing
If a picture is worth a thousand words, how many is a melody worth? The sound of birds chirping? In this generative seminar, we will look at how writing (poetry and prose) uses sound. We will think about listening as a practice that can teach us about the world and the page. We will read writing that uses sound as a central component; from the rhythmic iambic pentameter of Shakespeare to the experimental rhythms of contemporary writing, including how writers write about sound and convey sound in language. We will also think about voice, both on the page and in performance. There will be time to write, read, and share.
