The Songwriter’s Toolkit: Strategies for Composition

This course focuses on the music itself—melody, harmony, and structure. While we won’t focus on writing lyrics, we will examine how words dictate musical choices and how to make the music support the story.

The objective is to build your creative vocabulary. You will leave with strategies to help you find your unique sound and overcome writer’s block.

Treating songwriting as a distinct craft, we will look to other songwriters to build the skills required to create great work. As Mozart once said:

“”People err who think my art comes easily to me. I assure you, dear friend, nobody has devoted so much time and thought to compositions as I. There is not a famous master whose music I have not industriously studied through many times.””

We will break down specific elements used in songs across different genres, then apply those principles through hands-on exercises in class and at home.

Please note: This class or event is in-person and will be held at our center.
