The Memoir Workshop: Thursday Evenings
Workshop is for writers who want to think seriously about book-length memoir or collections in the context of narrative voice, structure and improving their craft. We’ll work with prompts, exercises, and consider strategies for revision to help you see your memoir in a new light. Each week we’ll look at exemplary readings and tackle issues such as characterization, description, scene vs. narrative summary, time and pacing, arc, and real-world consequences and ethical considerations when writing and publishing true-to-life stories. You should expect to present a new or revised piece each class. Students are also expected to read and comment on their fellow student’s submissions each week. While new writing is encouraged, interested writers should also consider this an opportunity to work through problems that have arisen with an existing manuscript. Writers will leave this class armed with the tools to transform previous and new work, even the most difficult ones, into a clear and compelling memoir of any length.
Please note: This class or event is hybrid. Some attendees will be in-person and some will attend online. There may be a limited number of in-person seats available. If you are participating online (using Zoom or a similar live platform), students or attendees should have a stable internet connection. Class participants: you should have a computer or device with a webcam and microphone; and your Zoom link will be automatically sent to you after you register. Check your spam box if you don't see it.
