The Filipino Ghost Story: Writing About the Past, Memory, and the Supernatural
In this three-hour workshop, Filipino writers are invited to engage in meaningful conversation about the Filipino American experience. Participants will read creative works by fellow Filipino authors and craft their own personal and imaginative pieces exploring themes of identity, family, culture, and home.
While the class uses ghost stories as a central theme, “ghosts” can be interpreted in many ways. Filipino folklore is rich with supernatural beings like the aswang, manananggal, duwende, kapre, the white lady, and more—mythical tales that reflect deeper truths about who we are as a people. This workshop offers a space to revisit and write about those stories passed down through generations. At the same time, it welcomes more personal narratives: Where do you come from? What shaped your family? What does being Filipino American mean to you? This is your chance to go deep, to explore the specific, nuanced stories that define your own experience. This is a generative workshop and will give participants the opportunity to be in community with other Filipino and Filipino American writers.
