When most people think of science fiction or fantasy, they think of novels, movies, comic books, or other narrative forms. But there’s also a thriving scene of poets working in the speculative space. This seminar will introduce and explore the concept of speculative poetry—poetry that plays with the themes and tropes commonly found in science fiction and fantasy. What “counts” as speculative poetry? How does it bridge the gap between narrative and poetic forms? What distinguishes speculative poetry from other poetic forms? Together, we’ll look at examples of speculative poetry and write several speculative poems of our own.
