Poetry for Fiction Writers

All stories requires fascinating characters and a compelling plot to be successful. But how do we reveal those characters and stories? Movies get images, music, and sound. Comic books get art and writing. Fiction, though, just gets language. And if you’re a fiction writer looking to improve your use of language, one of the best things you can do is turn to poetry.

In this workshop, we’ll examine how reading and writing poetry can prove immensely beneficial to a prose writer. Through example poems, writing exercises, and in-depth discussion, we’ll explore the overlap between poetry and fiction so you can find your own inner poet. We’ll consider which poetic techniques transfer well to fiction and look at ways you can apply a poetic eye to your stories and novels.
