Naval Battles in the Age of Sail

The romanticised image of ships fighting one another in the age of sail is a powerful tug on the reader’s imagination. This course gives the aspiring author a better understanding of the physics and tactics involved. We will cover a range of historio-fictional battle scenarios and describe how they had to unfold.
1. Triremes in battle in the Mediterranean.
2. A pirate ship attacking a Spanish Galleon.
3. Admiral Lord Nelson and the battles off Egypt and at Trafalgar.
4. If we have time, John Paul Jones in the Bon Homme Richard vs the HMS Serapis off Farnborough Head.
The Student will learn how to get the “Weather Gage” on these sorts of battles so as to write them convincingly.

The MuseTeacher: Sean Kery

Prerequisite: Open to writers of all levels of experience
