Moments of Change: Capturing Turning Points in Memoir
According to Joan Didion, “We tell ourselves stories in order to live.” Memoir distills lived experience into meaning, but how do we recognize the moments that matter? In this workshop, we will focus on the turning point–those pivotal moments when our perspective, identity, or world shifts in an irrevocable way. Turning points are the catalysts of story. Sometimes dramatic, like the sudden loss of a loved one, and other times subtle, like an epiphany over a cup of coffee, these moments provide momentum for transformation. This course invites you to identify, explore, and articulate these moments in your own life story. Why are we drawn to stories of change? Is it for catharsis, clarity, or connection? Together, we will explore how turning points operate in the work of memoirists like Zadie Smith, E.B. White, and Annie Dillard. We’ll examine how they shape turning points–internal and external–into vivid, compelling narrative events. After a brief instructor tutorial, students will write three short memoir pieces focused on moments of change, each aimed at deepening their understanding of narrative structure and the development of personal voice. In this way, they will actively study and practice craft techniques like scene construction and reflection.
