Midwestern Gothic
This class will consider the aesthetics of Midwestern Gothic. Students will explore the ways that isolation and stoicism with a touch of folk horror affect world building. Students will also consider how the Midwestern landscape of brittle autumn leaves and hazy stratus clouds affects character development. Writers such as Bonnie Jo Campbell, Stuart Dybek, and Scott Thomas will be discussed. Students will work on prompts in a generative writing workshop.
