Innovation from Imitation: Retrofitting Your Poems

This workshop is based on Theodore Roethke’s notion that “Imitation, conscious imitation, is one of the great methods, perhaps THE method of learning to write.” In the workshop we’ll look at various poems that powerfully display specific elements of craft, such as form (ghazal, anyone, or poem with an extended metaphor?), style, theme, and more. The poems you write will be new wineskins from old, so to speak–fresh work to be shared and critiqued that remakes poems from contemporary and older models. Prepare to be stretched and surprised by poems you never knew you could write.

Please note: This class or event will be held online (using Zoom or a similar live platform). To participate, students or attendees should have a stable internet connection. Class participants: you should have a computer or device with a webcam and microphone; and your Zoom link will be automatically sent to you after you register. Check your spam box if you don't see it.
