Global Forest Biomes
Whether guarded by wise tree-shepherds or supporting life on an alien moon, forests have long been integral to fantasy and science fiction—as locations, environments, and even characters in their own right. But how you present forest ecosystems in your writing can add depth and verisimilitude to your fictional worlds. In this Research for Writers seminar, we will survey the scope and diversity of forest ecosystems, from flooded equatorial rainforest to snowbound boreal taiga. We will examine how climate, topography and soil type help shape the nature and extent of forest ecosystems on every continent, and we will explore some of the world’s most unusual forests, from the mangroves of the Sundarbans to the elfin forests of Andean mountaintops. We will consider the evolution of forests through different levels of atmospheric oxygen, and how forest ecosystems have shifted across the landscape with changes in global climate. We will dive beneath the ocean to consider kelp forests and deep-sea coral forest, and we will imagine what kinds of forests might develop in alien environments—from high- and low-gravity planets to ocean worlds, Super-Earths and far beyond.
