Flash Nonfiction in the Morning
In this workshop, creative nonfiction and memoir writers will explore the genre of flash creative nonfiction (between 750 and 1,000 words). Flash CNF packs a punch through honed and purposeful prose. In this introductory course, we will explore the brevity and beauty of flash essays. We’ll look at the precision of “microscopic” moments, consider the power of titles and first sentences, learn why every word matters, and discover ways to weave elements of flash into our longer works to make them all the more impactful. Throughout the class, we will generate and critique our nonfiction flash, and discover how working in a shorter form allows you to take a fresh look at your work. You’ll explore ways to tighten your prose, to better focus and shape your story into something resonant and, as you’ll discover, “urgent.”
