First Five Paragraphs: Developing the Character’s Voice

What keeps a reader reading? It is not the subject matter; it’s the voice of the character. In the hands of a strong storyteller, the reader becomes intrigued and entranced from the first page. We will look at sample short stories and beginnings of novels from such writers as Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Edward P. Jones, and Margaret Atwood, and we’ll examine how they build the narrative and develop an intriguing character’s voice, right from the beginning. After some writing prompts, we will create a beginning to a new short story or revise an old one and receive feedback.
