Exhaustion, Rage, Mania, Ennui and What Poems Can Do About Them

Exhaustion, rage, mania and ennui seem to have graduated from temporary states of unpleasantness to wearily durable states of being. In this class, suitable for anyone who is not perfect and is a poet or writer at any level, we will read and write poems which engage, clarify and sublimate into representations with which one can live, works of art from which one can learn.

Poets we will read include but are not limited to Villon, Sappho, Shakespeare, Gwendolyn Brooks, Hölderlin, Rilke, Machado, Rumi, Hafez, Nazim Hikmet, Mark Strand, Rosanna Warren, Jorie Graham, Eavan Boland, Jorge Luis Borges, Elizabeth Bishop, Carolyn Forché, Theodore Roethke, Robert Pinsky, Frank Bidart, David Ferry, David Blair, Tanya Larkin, Peter Campion, Tim Seibles, and Fulke Greville, among others.

Please note: This class or event will be held online (using Zoom or a similar live platform). To participate, students or attendees should have a stable internet connection. Class participants: you should have a computer or device with a webcam and microphone; and your Zoom link will be automatically sent to you after you register. Check your spam box if you don't see it.
