Embodying Social Justice and Self-liberation: A Yoga and Writing Workshop with Bhav Brigade

This workshop invites other writers (or writer curious folx) into embodiment via journaling and subtle movements of the breath and body. We will challenge the Western, white appropriation of yoga by making intersectionality and decolonization central to how we theorize and liberate our bodies. We will intermittently write, pause, discuss, breathe, and move together. No yoga experience is required, but please wear comfortable clothes and bring a mat or large towel to practice on.

Danielle Stern, co-founder of the donation yoga group Bhav Brigade and an associate professor of communication and gender studies at Christopher Newport University, will facilitate the workshop. Danielle has been teaching yoga for eight years and has taught college-level writing classes for 20 years. She is the 2019 recipient of the Feminist Teacher-Mentor Award from the Organization for the Study of Communication, Language & Gender and the 2015 recipient of the Ellis-Bochner Autoethnography and Personal Narrative Research Award.

The enrollment fee is by donation on a sliding scale, with a portion benefiting programs at The Muse. We suggest donating $35, $25, or $15 depending on your financial situation. To reserve your spot for the workshop, please send your donation to DanielleBhav on Venmo or $DanielleStern on Cash app. If you have any questions, please email Danielle at daniellemstern@gmail.com.

Please note: This class or event is in-person and will be held at our center.
