Desire Engines: Writing Attraction, Chemistry & Tension
Desire is one of the most powerful forces in storytelling. When characters want something deeply, whether love, approval, connection, or power, that desire becomes the engine that drives the story forward.
In this intermediate/advanced craft course, writers will explore how attraction, emotional tension, and longing shape character behavior and narrative momentum. Through focused exercises and scene work, participants will learn how to write relationships that feel electric, layered, and emotionally compelling.
Topics include:
• The psychology of attraction in storytelling
• Emotional tension and narrative stakes
• Subtext and unspoken desire
• Dialogue that carries chemistry
• Desire as a driving force in plot and character action
By the end of the course, writers will leave with new tools for writing relationships and character dynamics that generate tension, momentum, and emotional resonance.
