Deconstructing Fantasy Tropes: A Four-Session Workshop

In this multi-session workshop, we will take a deep dive into the tropes that define fantasy storytelling, examining their origins, evolution, and potential for reinvention. Through discussion, analysis, and creative exercises, we’ll unravel classic elements such as dragons, wizards, and epic quests, challenging conventional narratives to uncover fresh perspectives and untold stories. Participants will engage with examples from literature, film, and mythology, while also generating their own work that subverts, reimagines, or revitalizes familiar tropes. Whether you’re looking to break free from clichés or craft something wholly original, this workshop will provide the tools and inspiration to push your fantasy writing in new directions.

Please note: This class or event is hybrid. Some attendees will be in-person and some will attend online. There may be a limited number of in-person seats available. If you are participating online (using Zoom or a similar live platform), students or attendees should have a stable internet connection. Class participants: you should have a computer or device with a webcam and microphone; and your Zoom link will be automatically sent to you after you register.
