Create a Literary Scene: Make a Lit Zine!
Reading and writing are best done in groups. Contrary to myths about the isolated writer, literary art is a social phenomenon, emerging in specific locations because of multiple artists, editors, and publishers working together and inspiring each other. A key facet of this social process is independent, DIY print culture, sometimes called “zines.” Zines have a long history, dating back to the origins of print culture in the 18th century, emerging more formally in interwar sci-fi fan cultures, where fans craved creative outlets for their energies and critical observations. This tradition carried into punk DIY culture in the 1970s and 80s, solidifying zines as a central medium for self-expression and artistic community building. This workshop will briefly survey the print (and digital) history of zines, offering insight into their roots in sci-fi fandom and their evolution into tools of market-autonomous creativity. Students will learn how to establish their own literary and artistic community centered on a zine. From crafting a compelling concept to curating content and collaborating with peers, students will receive hands-on guidance at every stage.
The course will provide practical tools for layout design, print production, and print and digital distribution. Students will also discuss methods for sharing their work through print and digital formats. By the end of the course, students will have the skills, knowledge, and confidence to launch their own literary movement
