Cover Versions: Poetry and Inspiration

This course will focus on the writing of poems inspired by everything from poems written in other languages or earlier epochs to Rolling Stones’ songs, Rabelaisian anecdotes, Seinfeld reruns, Psalms from the King James Bible, or anything else we think of. The methods are what we will study: the techniques a poet uses to take inspiration from another work of art and make it into original poetry. We will examine a wide range of such inspired poems by Frank O’Hara, Francois Villon, Elizabeth Bishop, Rosanna Warren, Tim Seibles and William Shakespeare, among others. Students will also write and workshop their own original poems written in response to what inspires them.

Please note: This class or event is hybrid. Some attendees will be in-person and some will attend online. There may be a limited number of in-person seats available. If you are participating online (using Zoom or a similar live platform), students or attendees should have a stable internet connection. Class participants: you should have a computer or device with a webcam and microphone; and your Zoom link will be automatically sent to you after you register.
