Character in Story: The Mind & The Matter

What makes a character feel real? In this six-session class, we’ll explore the psychological depth and narrative function of characters, from protagonists to sidekicks. You’ll learn how memory, trauma, and personality shape motivation; how body language and dialogue reveal hidden truths; and how environments—from small towns to dystopias—shape who characters become. We’ll also examine morally gray characters, the evolution of familiar tropes, and the power of voice and silence in storytelling. Through discussion, examples, and generative exercises, you’ll build characters that feel fully alive—flawed, fascinating, and unforgettable.
