J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings isn’t a mainstay in many creative writing workshops. It breaks a lot of what are considered “the rules” of contemporary novels, and yet it’s considered by many to be one of the 20th century’s greatest works of fiction. In this one-session workshop, we’ll consider Tolkien’s masterwork from a creative writer’s vantage, delving into the process of its 12-year composition period and discussing what writing guidance we can draw from this singular artist. Familiarity with The Lord of the Rings (the novel or even the films) will probably make this course more interesting & engaging but is not required!
