Writing College Application Essays
Do you need to write your college essay but don’t know where to start? Do you need to refine your current college essay draft? Join this interactive workshop series to learn how to write powerful college application essays. It’s open to writers of all levels pursuing any discipline or degree and will help students understand what makes an application essay successful and how to write one effectively.
Class One: Saturday, December 7 from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM
Intro & Overview – The first class is a crash course in writing college application essays. We’ll discuss what application essays are and why we write them to understand that they are as much about the people reading them as they are about the people writing them. In this class we’ll focus on how to target application essays, discuss sample essays to learn what’s working and isn’t, and end with a brainstorming activity to create a compelling hook.
Class Two: Saturday, December 14 at 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM
Workshop & Review – The second class will focus on workshopping the students’ essays. Students are expected to share a completed draft that we’ll review together, and they’ll receive the instructor’s notes with actionable advice for revisions. As we review the essays, we’ll also touch on important writing advice, such as having clear word choice, concise sentences, logical transitions, and memorable endings. We’ll conclude with advice on the college application process and have time for questions.
Students can attend in-person or online. Active participation is required. If a student is joining online they must keep their camera on.
